Introducing Frumpy Monkey!

Naomi, Yuzhen, Emma and I have formed an illustration collective named Frumpy Monkey. We will be bringing to life stories given to us by local primary school children, creating a fun performance that gives these children and their imaginative ideas a voice in their community.

The name Frumpy Monkey was a collective decision. We were looking for something fun and quirky that didn't give away the stories we are hoping to tell. We decided to treat the problem of coming up with a name a bit like a game. We wanted something that sounded funny, and made people question what it was. Naomi came up with the word Frumpy, originally thinking of strange combinations of words like Frumpy Doughnut, but it didn't quite feel right. Whilst visiting one of the venues for our event, we started to bounce ideas off eachother. I was thinking about what would link to our work, and I came up with the word Monkey - it even rhymes! (There was originally a monkey in one of the stories, but we have taken that out to make it more simple to perform and understand).

Naomi designed the poster for us. We wanted to continue the theme of food items, as we are currently busy making props for our performance, so we thought it would be funny to make the poster or the Frumpy Monkey brand look like a cereal box, using the colours we have chosen to paint our props. Naomi did a great job!
